This presentation offers a practical overview of today's renewable energy systems, and the subrogation issues that come with them. It covers how solar, wind, hydro, and other renewable technologies are built and integrated with battery energy storage and the power grid. The session outlines where failures can occur, what drives those failures, and how to approach forensic investigation across different system types. We will also discuss insurance and liability considerations unique to renewable energy claims, supported by real case examples from field investigations. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how these systems work, how they fail, and how to protect the integrity of evidence and recovery potential when they do.

Meet the speaker, Michael Lilien. Michael's range of engineering experience is wide and deep. He has worked as a forensic engineer with EFI Global since 2020, managing projects as varied as home and vehicle fires, battery failures, product testing, evaluation, and renewable site investigations. Prior to his time at EFI Global, Mr. Lilien spent considerable time with electric utilities working field operations, construction project management, distribution operations, standards writing and design review. After that while in manufacturing Mr. Lilien led engineering teams completing design work, considerable troubleshooting and forensic work of product, and new product research and development. Mr. Lilien has a wife and three daughters in Columbia, MO and spends most weekends coaching his daughters’ basketball teams.
